1st Place for Harbour Shores 6 Star Green Star Initiatives

Harbour Shores Wins Gold in Sydney Design Awards, Better Futures for Environmental Sustainability.

Harbour Shores: A Blueprint for Sustainable Living

In a resounding testament to its commitment to environmental excellence, the Gold Coast’s master-planned community, Harbour Shores, has been awarded the prestigious Gold at the recent BETTER FUTURE Sydney Design Awards. The accolade, in the Environmental Sustainability category, recognises the development’s pioneering six-star Green Star certification, which establishes a new benchmark for eco-conscious living in the region.

The Green Star Standard

The Green Star rating system, managed by the Green Building Council of Australia, is an internationally recognised tool for evaluating the sustainability performance of buildings and communities. A 6 Star Green Star rating signifies ‘World Leadership’, the highest possible level of accreditation, and is awarded to projects that demonstrate exceptional commitment to environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

Harbour Shores achieved this world-leading status by implementing a comprehensive suite of sustainable initiatives. The project’s success underscores a growing industry trend where developers are prioritising not only aesthetic appeal but also environmental responsibility.

A Fossil-Fuel-Free Future

Harbour Shores is designed to be entirely fossil-fuel-free, with its infrastructure powered solely by electricity. This forward-thinking approach enables residents to utilise 100% renewable energy sources, significantly reducing their carbon footprint. The development also incorporates a 1,000kW solar PV system, which is projected to reduce peak electricity consumption by an impressive 34%.

Beyond its energy strategy, the project features extensive green infrastructure. More than 200,000 native and tropical plants will be planted across the 16-hectare site, enhancing biodiversity, improving air quality, and reducing the urban heat island effect. Over 54% of the development is dedicated to open green spaces and communal areas, fostering a sense of community and connection with nature.

Water and Waste Initiatives

Water conservation is another cornerstone of the Harbour Shores design. The community’s master plan includes rainwater harvesting systems for irrigation, conserving thousands of litres of potable water annually. Inside the homes, water-efficient appliances further minimise consumption, leading to reduced utility bills for residents.

In a move to tackle construction waste, the project has committed to reusing or recycling over 80% of all on-site construction materials. This circular economy approach minimises landfill waste and sets a high standard for sustainable construction practices in large-scale developments.

The recognition at the Sydney Design Awards not only celebrates Harbour Shores’ achievements but also provides a powerful example for future developments, proving that luxury, community, and environmental stewardship can coexist harmoniously.
